As I said in the Research/Creative page, I spent a few months as part of the IBM Global Innovation Outlook (GIO) for Media and Content. For me, the best part of the experience was meeting and talking with some of the smartest people I've ever met. I was energized and humbled by the quality of intellects IBM has attracted.
Some of the best minds work with the IBM Institute for Business Value. These people publish regularly about global trends and key developments in media and content. Here are links to some of their best analyses:

In May of 2006, as my graduate students in New Media were preparing to leave, I was approached by one of the stars of the class, Greg Hedges who asked for my advice on negotiating his job offers. I reminded Greg of just how good he was and told him to entertain only commensurate offers.
A few days later, I ran in to him and asked whether he had accepted his latest offer. His answer stunned me. "No," he said. "I really would like to start a business with you." Greg then invited one of his classmates, Doug Strahler, to talk about starting a business together.
That conversation led to the founding of 315 Design, and a body of work that I would put up against any interactive design agency in the world. Below are a few samples.

The ReadySet
Working with the Division of Student Affairs at Syracuse University, we were contracted to help rationalize the communications to first-year students. 315 worked with the Office of the Executive VP to rationalize the work-flows and develop a graphically united, logically-paced set of communications for first year students. We developed the graphical identity, the standardized layouts for several booklets, manuals and information one-sheets as well as the accompanying web sites, t-shirts, student book-bags and other collateral materials.
The resulting system won the following national and international awards:
- The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), Gold Award in the
First Year, Orientation, Parents, and Other Programs category.
- NASPA Grand Silver Excellence Award (Overall Excellence).
- National Orientation Directors Association (NODA) 2007 Publications Showcase Award for
the Outstanding General Handbook.
- The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District II Silver winner in
the Leadership in Communications category, 2008 Accolades Awards.
- Most Innovative Submission in Best Practices in Staying Relevant to Students, the
November installment of the National Student Affairs Best Practices Reports.

Web site for Steel City Toolworks
For this Pittsburgh based company, we developed the full information architecture specification, the web site and the supporting brand management system. The site had to support an international manufaturing and distributor network requiring us to create multiple versions of both the site and the information management system.
The US version of the site is available at steelcitytoolworks.com |

Web site for the Institute for the Study of the Judiciary, Politcs and the Media.
Another complete system build. For IJPM, we developed the graphical identity, the full information architecture specification, the web site and the supporting content management system. The site is available at jpm.syr.edu |

Web site for the Tully Center for Free Speech.
For the Tully Center, we developed the graphical identity, the full information architecture specification, the web site and the supporting content management system. The site is available at tully.syr.edu
The layout and structure for this site became the template for a number of other sites within the Newhouse School's domain. |

SM(D) : Strategic Media x Design
 |
As an applied researcher, I actively seek to test my hypotheses and conclusions in real-world situations. There's nothing so practical as a good theory, and good theories allow us to do practical things. SM(D) is where I put theory into practice.
Running my own company certainly gives me credibility, and there's no better way tokeep current in a field like new media than being a practitioner with demanding clients and real problems to solve.

In his victory speech on that historic election night, President-elect Obama made extended reference to Ann Nixon Cooper, the 106-year-old Georgia woman who voted earlier on election week. Mr. Obama learned about Ms. Cooper from a multimedia story written by New Media alum Robert Johnson. You can see the story here.
Below is a photograph of Robert with Ms. Nixon Cooper, along with a posting from his facebook page.

I stopped by Mrs. Ann Cooper's house today!
Obama mentioned her in his speech last night.
"She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin. I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America: the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can!"
My managers told me while I was on assignment in Florida that it was my story that Obama read and called Cooper.
