About this site
The official faculty site for:
The Classes page contains descriptions of, and resources for the classes I teach. In addition I have placed links to all of my lecture slides, as well as selected presentatons created by students.
My most recent research and creative activities are described on (funnily enough) the Research/Creative page, and the Links page has additional resources for students, as well as information about my recent activities. Examples of current and former student work are available throughout this site.
I also run a strategic communications consultancy, SM(D) that helps clients use digital, social and interactive media to best effect. See the site here.

SONY Pictures digital, audience validation
For the New Media Management capstone class, SONY Pictures asked us to determine whether or not there was an audience for "social showings" of movies. These would be theater presentations where the audience would be encouraged to use their mobile phones to text friends and tweet comments. This report summarized our findings.

Unwasted: The Book Site
A few years ago, Sacha Zimmerman was a student in one of my graphic design classes. Today she's Sacha Z. Scoblic, successful writer and editor. She's gotten to where she is by dealing bravely and forthrightly with all that's come her way, including her personal demons. When she published her book Unwasted, My Lush Sobriety, she asked me to develop her web site. This one was a privilege.

SM(D) : Strategic Media x Design
As an applied researcher, I actively seek to test my hypotheses and conclusions in real-world situations. There's nothing so practical as a good theory, and good theories allow us to do practical things. SM(D) is where I put theory into practice.
Running my own company is the single best test of my credibility; there's no better way tokeep current in a field like new media than being a practitioner with demanding clients and real problems to solve.

New Media Management: Case Studies Class
Every Spring, we hold a week-long seminar in New York city where grad students get a chance to meet and interact with industry leaders. Led by adjunct professor Larry Kramer, the class is a chance to speak with media leaders from the C-suites of leading companies; people like Lisa Gersh, Sharon Otterman and John Kosner.

The World Journalism Project
Site created with Jeff Pasetti. This is an ongoing project that fulfills Chancellor Nancy Cantor's vision for Scholarship in Action. Students from the Newhouse School travelled to Grahamstown South Africa to tell the people's stories. In the future, the class will travel all around the world to demonstrate ways that we are different, and how those ways also make us the same. You can see the site by clicking here. |

Guest Lectures page --NEW
I've given a number of guest and visiting lectures over the years, and at the last one (the SMBtv talk in Albany) the audience told me it was time to start sharing the slides.
They were right.
I've started. You can see the page here |
